What is Resistol?

Resistol is a nutritional supplement from Advanced Bionutritionals. The supplement claims to support a healthy immune system using five supporting herbs, including adaptogenic plant extracts.

Some people take Resistol daily to support immunity, reducing the risk of the common cold and other minor illnesses. Others take Resistol at the first onset of cold or flu symptoms, using it to reduce the duration of symptoms and recover more quickly.

Resistol is available through AdvancedBionutritionals.com, where it’s priced around $30 per bottle. Advanced Bionutritionals is a Georgia-based supplement company backed by a research team with four doctors, including Medical Doctors (MDs) and Naturopathic Doctors (NDs).

As part of a 2020 marketing campaign, Advanced Bionutritionals is marketing Resistol online as an extra line of defense against COVID-19.

“With everything going on in the world right now,” explains the official website, “Andrographis is finally starting to get the attention it deserves.”

Let’s take a closer look at how Resistol works, including the types of plant extracts used in the formula.

How Does Resistol Work?

Resistol claims to use herbal and plant extracts to raise white blood cell count, enhancing your body’s ability to defend itself.

Many of the ingredients in Resistol are considered adaptogenic herbs, which means they help your body manage stress. An adaptogen has demonstrated some ability to support your body against stress, helping you handle the physical and cognitive effects of environmental stressors.

Resistol also claims to support immunity by calming excess inflammation. When your body is inflamed, your immune system needs to work harder to overcome this inflammation. By soothing inflammation, Resistol purportedly makes it easier for your body to target other important issues – like illnesses.

In other words, Resistol supports immunity and reduces the risk and duration of illness in three ways:

  • Increasing white blood cell count
  • Calming inflammation
  • Helping your body manage stress

Here’s how each of the five ingredients in Resistol helps with immunity, according to Advanced Bionutritionals:

Andrographis: Andrographis is an Asian shrub that purportedly strengthens and balances your immune system. Andrographis played a crucial role in ancient Indian (Ayurvedic) and ancient Chinese medicine, where it was often used for lung and respiratory issues. Today, some people continue to use Andrographis to treat runny noses and congestion or to reduce aches, pain, and fever. Advanced Bionutritionals claims Andrographis increases white blood cell count and calms excess inflammation.

Eleuthero: Resistol contains eleuthero, another popular herbal extract used in traditional Chinese medicine. The plant extract is another adaptogen that helps your body adapt to stress. Stress weakens the immune system. By supporting your body against stress, Resistol claims to help you avoid feeling run-down.

Platycodon: Advanced Bionutritionals describes Platycodon as “a Korean kitchen ingredient that clears your nose and lungs.” The ingredient was used for centuries in Korea, China, and Japan to relieve coughs and sore throats. You can find Andrographis and eleuthero in other immune booster supplements, but Platycodon is less well-known.

Prickly Chaff Flower: Prickly chaff flower is a herb that grows naturally in India. It’s rich with flavonoids, which are natural antioxidants and anti-inflammatories. It supports the other effects of Resistol, reducing stress, and boosting immunity. Like Platycodon, prickly chaff flower is a lesser-known immune-boosting ingredient compared to Andrographis and eleuthero.

Chinese Licorice: Advanced Bionutritionals claims that 80% of Chinese medicine products use Chinese licorice. It’s a “transporter herb” that acts “like a bus”: it takes other active ingredients exactly where they need to do and enhances absorption.

Although Advanced Bionutritionals describes the last ingredient as ‘Chinese’ licorice, it’s labeled on the bottle as simply licorice extract. Ingredients like eleuthero, meanwhile, maybe better known as Siberian ginseng.

Resistol Ingredients

Resistol contains a blend of herbal and plant extracts that purportedly support immunity. Advanced Bionutritionals lists each ingredient and dosage upfront. Other companies mask dosages using proprietary formulas, but Advanced Bionutritionals seems to be more transparent.

Each two capsule serving (30 servings / 60 capsules per bottle) of Resistol includes the following ingredients:

  • 250mg of Andrographis
  • 150mg of Platycodon
  • 120mg of Eleuthero
  • 150mg of Prickly chaff flower
  • 75mg of Licorice

The ingredients are packaged into a vegetarian capsule with powdered cellulose, silica, and calcium palmitate used as binders, fillers, and preservatives.

Scientific Evidence for Resistol

Advanced Bionutritionals has multiple doctors on its board, and its supplements tend to be backed by scientific evidence. Let’s look at the scientific evidence supporting Resistol. Can this supplement increase white blood cell count using natural ingredients and herbal extracts?

In this 2014 review study, researchers analyzed dozens of studies on Andrographis. Andrographis has been used as a traditional medicine in India, China, and Southeast Asia for centuries. Modern scientific evidence tells us the aerial parts of the plant possess most of the medicinal properties and can be used to treat snakebites, insect stings, fever, sore throat, cough, and stomach ache. Researchers traced these benefits to the high levels of flavonoids and other phytochemical compounds. Researchers cautioned that more research was needed to confirm the toxicity (or lack of toxicity) of Andrographis. However, they were overall supportive of using Andrographis as a treatment for underlying illnesses.

Resistol seems to contain a lower dose of Andrographis than used in other studies. Some studies use 3,000 to 6,000mg of Andrographis per day for sore throat and fever, while Resistol contains just 250mg. Other studies, however, use doses of 100mg to 500mg, which makes Resistol’s treatment seem more appropriate.

Platycodon is not studied as well as Andrographis. However, this 2014 study showed that platycosides from the root of the Platycodon plant could have certain health benefits. Researchers analyzed the chemical composition of the platycosides. They concluded that they “have numerous health benefits and the potential to be used as a remedy against a number of the major health hazards (e.g., cancer, obesity, and Alzheimer’s) faced by many countries.” However, researchers cautioned that more work was needed to verify the effects and toxicity.

Eleuthero is a small, woody shrub also linked to immune-boosting benefits. It’s also known as Siberian ginseng. The standard eleuthero dosage is 300 to 1,200mg per day, although studies have used 2,000 to 4,000mg with no side effects. Resistol contains just 120mg of eleuthero.

One of the unique ingredients in Resistol is prickly chaff flower, also known as Achyranthes Aspera, burweed, or devil’s horsewhip. We have not seen this ingredient in many other immune-boosting compounds, and there’s limited research exploring its connection to immunity. The plant is commonly used in traditional Indian medicine, although it lacks the scientific evidence of other herbal and plant extracts on this list.

Overall, Resistol is backed by some scientific evidence, although Advanced Bionutritionals has not run any clinical trials or studies specifically on its formula. Instead, the company cites third party research on individual ingredients.
