What is Primal Labs Sleep Refined?
Sleep Refined is a nutritional supplement that purportedly boosts quality and duration of sleep, leaving you more alert the next day.
The supplement is made by Primal Labs, which offers a range of formulas targeting different health benefits.
Primal Labs is marketing Sleep Refined online through a dramatic sales page featuring a woman named “Sarah” who claims to have spent years trying every sleep aid she could find. She never experienced a good sleep from any sleep aid until she tried Sleep Refined.
Oddly, that marketing video describes a “problem with melatonin,” recommending that people “should do this instead” and take different ingredients. This advice is unusual because Sleep Refined contains a similar dose of melatonin compared to other sleep aids.
Sleep Refined is available online through RefineYourSleep.com, PrimalLabs.com, and Amazon.com, although it’s priced between $37 and $50 per bottle wherever you order.
Sleep Refined Features & Benefits
Primal Labs advertises Sleep Refined with all of the following benefits:
100% non-habit-forming and safe for daily use
Fall asleep more quickly and stay asleep longer
Wake up more refreshed and energized
Calm busy mind
Strengthen your natural sleep cycle for a more restorative sleep
Like other melatonin supplements, Sleep Refined is designed to be taken nightly. You take it when you want to fall asleep. Most take it 60 minutes before falling asleep, for example, to enjoy a more restful night.
How Does Sleep Refined Work?
Sleep Refined contains ingredients like melatonin and L-theanine to help you fall asleep more easily – and stay asleep to enjoy a more restful and relaxing night’s rest.
At first glance, Sleep Refined looks different than other nutritional supplements: the formula has a ‘dual and timed-release technology.’ The capsule has two colors, including a brown layer on one side and a blue layer on the other side. This dual and timed-release technology means the active ingredients pass through your stomach without being harmed by stomach acid. They ultimately end up in your intestines, where your body can more effectively absorb them.
To achieve its advertised benefits, Sleep Refined contains just four active ingredients. Like 90% of other sleep aids, Sleep Refined contains 4mg of melatonin, which has been shown to encourage sleepiness in some studies. Your body creates melatonin when it’s dark outside and time to fall asleep. It’s your mind’s way of signaling your body that it’s time to rest.
However, unlike other sleep aids, Primal Labs Sleep Refined also contains 50mg of an ingredient we’ve never heard: Apocynum venetum leaf extract, labeled as a registered trademark formula called Venetron.
Sleep Refined also rounds out its formula with 200mg of L-theanine and 60mg of calcium.
L-theanine is a natural chemical in green tea that may nullify certain negative effects of caffeine. Some take L-theanine to avoid the jitters of caffeine, for example. Others take L-theanine as part of a nootropic stack: caffeine and L-theanine is one of the most popular nootropic supplements available today.
Sleep Refined also contains 60mg of calcium, which is 5% of your Daily Value (DV) of calcium. It’s unclear why the formula contains calcium, and Primal Labs does not mention calcium anywhere on its sales page. However, this small amount of calcium is unlikely to have a significant effect on health.
Primal Labs Sleep Refined Ingredients
Primal Labs uses four active ingredients and several inactive ingredients to achieve its targeted benefits, including:
60mg of calcium (5% of your Daily Value or DV)
50mg of Apocynum venetum leaf extract (in the form of Venetron)
200mg of L-theanine (in the form of Suntheanine)
4mg of melatonin
Primal Labs has also added an unusually large number of fillers, binders, artificial colors, and other added inactive ingredients to the formula. Each tablet contains dicalcium phosphate, modified cellulose, behenic acid, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, natural and artificial colors, stearic acid, croscarmellose sodium, vegetable juice color, and silicon dioxide. These ingredients mostly work as binders, fillers, or preservatives within the Primal Labs Sleep Refined formula.
Scientific Evidence for Sleep Refined
It’s no secret that melatonin is linked with sleep. Your body produces melatonin naturally when it’s time to fall asleep. Your body creates melatonin based on your circadian rhythm – your body’s natural day and night cycles. Typically, your body produces melatonin when it’s dark outside, then stops producing melatonin during daylight.
Millions of people take melatonin to help them fall asleep. Thousands of sleep aid nutritional supplements contain melatonin. Some studies have shown melatonin can help you fall asleep and stay asleep, although other studies show melatonin is poorly absorbed by the body – and it may be more of a placebo effect than anything.
In this 2014 review study, researchers reviewed 60+ studies on melatonin to determine the truth behind melatonin supplementation. Researchers found melatonin worked in some people – but not others.
“Overall, results from this review suggest that melatonin shows promise to prevent phase shifts from jet lag and improve insomnia in otherwise healthy adults, but to a limited extent, the use of melatonin in shift workers is inconclusive.”
Researchers added that melatonin was not linked with any serious adverse effects or health risks. However, researchers cautioned that even a small amount of melatonin taken during the day (0.1 to 1.0mg) “produced significant drowsiness, fatigue, and performance decrements,” with effects peaking 3 to 4 hours after ingestion.
In other words, the 4mg of melatonin in Sleep Refined should help you fall asleep more easily and stay asleep, although not all studies have been 100% supportive of melatonin.
Of course, you don’t have to pay $35 to $50 per bottle for melatonin supplements: you can find melatonin sleep aids for under $10 per bottle. What makes Sleep refined differently? The formula contains unique ingredients that aren’t found in other sleep aids – like Apocynum venetum leaf extract and L-theanine.
Sleep Refined contains 50mg of a little-known ingredient named Apocynum venetum leaf extract. Also known as sword leaf dogbane, this plant is poisonous but used as a source of fiber. Traditionally, the plant was used to treat hypertension (High blood pressure).
In this 2012 study, researchers found that Apocynum venetum leaf extract could lower blood pressure, supporting its use in traditional folk medicine.
We can find no major studies linking Apocynum venetum leaf extract to better sleep quality or other sleep benefits. However, it’s possible that the plant extract indirectly supports sleep quality by lowering blood pressure.
Similarly, L-theanine is known for its anti-anxiety effects, although some research has shown L-theanine can promote relaxation and sleep by promoting changes in the brain. Multiple studies, including this 2019 study, showed that L-theanine impacted GABA levels in the brain, which seemed to affect sleep behavior.
Primal Labs also claims Sleep Refined can impact heart health, brain health, and skin health, among other benefits.
It’s also important to note that Primal Labs cites just three studies to support all of its advertised benefits. Typically, when a supplement makes this many claims about its benefits, we expect to see plenty more scientific evidence – especially given the fact that Primal Labs has not conducted any clinical trials or scientific studies on its own supplement, relying instead on third-party research on different formulas.
Overall, Sleep Refined’s three active ingredients could lower blood pressure and promote better sleep quality, although it’s also possible to get similar benefits from a much cheaper L-theanine or melatonin supplement. Primal Labs makes other unusual claims about its supplement's health benefits that are less proven, including its ability to impact heart health, brain health, and youthful skin.
