What is GI Renew?

GI Renew is a digestive support supplement sold online through GundryMD,.com. The supplement uses ingredients like slippery elm, prickly pear cactus, chamomile, and apple extract to soothe your upper digestive tract.

Gundry MD markets GI Renew as a relief supplement for heartburn, indigestion, bloating, and general abdominal discomfort after meals. If you suffer from heartburn and indigestion, then you can purportedly take GI Renew daily to support digestive health.

Each bottle of GI Renew contains 30 tablets. You take one tablet daily to help with digestion. A bottle is priced around $65.

How Does GI Renew Work?

Gundry MD claims GI Renew is clinically proven to relieve indigestion and similar digestion-related issues. By taking one tablet daily, you can purportedly relieve bloating, indigestion, and abdominal discomfort after meals.

How does GI Renew do that? Gundry MD claims the ingredients in GI Renew coat your esophagus and upper gastrointestinal lining, leading to smoother and more comfortable bowel movements.

Said in a less fancy way, GI Renew claims to help you poop more easily. Traditionally, ingredients like slippery elm were used to treat indigestion because they encourage bowel movements. Each tablet of GI Renew contains a significant dose of slippery elm and other ingredients that could support digestion.

GI Renew also claims to target heartburn – not just indigestion and abdominal discomfort. If you experience heartburn after meals, then GI Renew could help soothe your digestive tract, reducing the risk of heartburn.

Overall, each tablet of GI Renew can purportedly lead to the following benefits:

  • Relieve stomach discomfort and heartburn after meals
  • Help you lose weight by boosting metabolism and giving you better craving control
  • Repair an aging digestive tract to give you more manageable, more regular trips to the bathroom
  • Feel content, more energized and satisfied after meals instead of uncomfortable and tired

Gundry MD claims each of these benefits is linked with a specific ingredient. Prickly pear cactus and slippery elm bark, for example, can purportedly boost digestion. However, Gundry MD does not explain how the two other active ingredients – chamomile and apple extract – improve digestion or support the other advertised benefits.

GI Renew Ingredients

Gundry MD claims the ingredients in GI Renew are “sourced, cultivated, and extracted according to industry safety and purity standards,” which doesn’t tell us much about the ingredients or where they are sourced. We know Gundry MD manufactures its supplements in the United States, although it’s unclear where the ingredients themselves come from.

However, Gundry MD does disclose the full list of ingredients and dosages, making it easy to compare GI Renew to other digestive support supplements. We know GI Renew contains the following ingredients:

  • 400mg of prickly pear cactus
  • 300mg of slippery elm
  • 100mg of chamomile flower extract
  • 100mg of apple extract (as AppleZin)

Typically, digestive support supplements contain probiotics and anti-inflammatory ingredients. GI Renew, however, contains different ingredients because it targets a different aspect of digestion. By targeting your upper digestive tract, GI Renew claims to soothe heartburn and indigestion, among other issues. We haven’t seen apple extract or prickly pear cactus in many other supplements, although chamomile and slippery elm extract are more common.

As mentioned above, Gundry MD provides limited information about these ingredients and how they work. Gundry MD claims slippery elm and prickly pear cactus boost digestion, for example, but the company does not explain why they added chamomile or apple extract.

Other inactive ingredients in GI Renew include dicalcium phosphate, microcrystalline cellulose, stearic acid, croscarmellose sodium, hydroxypropyl cellulose, silicon dioxide, magnesium stearate, and a Hypromellose and polyethylene glycol coating. All of these ingredients are used to make the GI Renew tablet.

Overall, Gundry MD provides limited information about how GI Renew works or what its ingredients do – so let’s look at the science behind the supplement.

Scientific Evidence for GI Renew

Gundry MD has not performed any clinical trials or scientific studies on its formula. The company also does not cite any third party scientific studies or other evidence.

Does GI Renew work as advertised to relieve heartburn and indigestion? Let’s take a closer look at the science.

Mayo Clinic’s Katherine Zeratsky, RD, LD analyzed evidence on prickly pear extract and admitted it could decrease blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes and lessen the effects of a hangover due to its anti-inflammatory effects. Prickly pear extract is also rich with antioxidants and carotenoids. Plus, it’s high in fiber.

Side effects of prickly pear extract can include mild diarrhea, nausea, increased stool volume, increased stool frequency, and abdominal fullness – all of which are desired dynamic effects in GI Renew.

Zeratksy claimed it was too early to call prickly pear extract a superfood, although the formula does seem to have legitimate benefits for digestion and overall health and wellness.

Many people take slippery elm for digestion. Traditionally, slippery elm extract was used to treat constipation caused by irritable bowel syndrome. As WebMD explains, some people mix a small amount of slippery elm with water to make a slurry, for example, then drink it to soothe digestion issues. Others take the same mixture to alleviate heartburn or mild stomach discomfort. Overall, slippery elm has shown some evidence of supporting digestion and other issues, although more research is needed to verify its safety and efficacy.

AppleZin and chamomile, meanwhile, are rich with antioxidants, polyphenols, and anti-inflammatories that could soothe digestion issues and promote overall health and wellness.

Overall, Gundry MD’s GI Renew has not been studied or tested in any significant trial. However, the ingredients in GI Renew should work as advertised to soothe digestion issues, promote digestive regularity, and relieve heartburn, among other benefits.
