By taking Matter daily, you can purportedly support long-term brain health, improve memory and learning, and enjoy other cognitive effects.

How does Elysium Matter work? Is there any evidence the supplement works? Find out everything you need to know about Elysium’s new nootropic Matter supplement today in our review.

What is Elysium Matter?

Elysium Matter is a nutritional supplement that claims to support cognition in various ways. The supplement uses a B-vitamin complex to purportedly slow age-related brain atrophy, reducing the risk of cognitive decline as you get older. The supplement also claims to specifically target the areas of your brain associated with memory and learning.

Each jar of Elysium Matter contains 60 tablets. You take two tablets per day to support brain health.

The matter is made by Elysium Health, a New York City health and wellness company. The company is best-known for a similar supplement called Basis, which provides anti-aging effects using NAD+.

Does Elysium’s nootropic Matter supplement really work as advertised to support cognition? Let’s take a closer look at how Matter works.

How Does Matter Work?

Matter provides anti-aging effects specifically for your brain. Matter uses a B-vitamin complex to slow age-related brain atrophy in the parts of your brain that govern memory and learning, supporting long-term brain health.

Here are the key mechanisms behind Matter:

Matter uses a B-vitamin complex to slow brain atrophy as you get older; atrophy is the death of brain cells, and Matter claims to slow down the death of brain cells as you age, which would reduce the risk of cognitive decline

Matter claims to slow age-related grey matter atrophy in the memory and learning sectors of your brain by 86%, on average

Matter uses omega-3 fatty acids and anthocyanins to further support cognitive health; omega-3 fatty acids have a proven connection to cognitive health, while anthocyanins are trendy antioxidants linked with various health and wellness benefits

As proof Matter works as advertised to reduce brain atrophy, Elysium cites a two-year study performed by researchers at the University of Oxford. One hundred sixty-eight older adults with mild memory concerns took a B-vitamin complex or a placebo. Participants in the B-vitamin complex group were able to significantly slow the rate of brain atrophy compared to a placebo.

Lead researcher A. David Smith was impressed by the results of the B-vitamin complex:

“The results were more strikingly positive than we could have dreamt.”

Researchers used MRI images to reveal significant changes in the bilateral hippocampus and parahippocampal gyrus, retrosplenial precuneus, lingual and fusiform gyrus, and the cerebellum, among other areas of the brain.

In other words, the B-vitamin complex targeted the death of ‘grey matter,’ which Elysium describes as “the brain’s processing center.” The grey matter in your brain is responsible for learning, memory, motor control, balance, and coordination. As you get older, your grey matter shrinks. It’s part of the normal aging process. Elysium claims their Matter supplement slows the rate of cell death, reducing cognitive decline compared to a placebo.

Matter Ingredients

Matter uses a B-vitamin complex, omega-3 fatty acids, and bilberry anthocyanins to achieve its targeted effects:

B-Vitamin Complex: Matter’s B-vitamin complex is patented to slow brain atrophy. Elysium Health developed the complex in exclusive partnership with the University of Oxford. As mentioned above, a two-year study proved this B-vitamin complex worked as advertised to significantly reduce cognitive decline in patients. Matter contains 20mg of vitamin B6 (1,176% of your Daily Value), 1,333mcg of folate (333% DV), and 500mcg of vitamin B12 (20,833% DV).

Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Omega-3 fatty acids – like the ones found in fish – have been linked to cognitive health. Many take omega-3 fatty acid supplements daily to support cardiovascular and cognitive health. Matter contains omega-3 fatty acids with EPA and DHA (as free fatty acids). The company claims its omega-3 fatty acids are absorbed 3 to 4 times more readily than typical fish oil supplements. Matter contains 584mg of an omega-3 lysine complex with 262mg of EPA and DHA. Oddly, Matter does not disclose the specific dosage of EPA or DHA – something that most other omega-3 fatty acid supplements disclose.

Bilberry Anthocyanins: Anthocyanins are found in a growing number of nutritional supplements, including antioxidants and anti-inflammatory supplements. Anthocyanins are the natural chemicals that give red, purple, and blue plants their rich coloring. Because of the bilberry Anthocyanins, each Matter tablet has a distinctive blue/purple color. Matter contains 160mg of bilberry fruit extract.

Inactive ingredients in Matter include microcrystalline cellulose, Hypromellose, croscarmellose sodium, silica, hydroxypropyl cellulose, calcium carbonate, vegetable magnesium stearate, sunflower oil, spirulina extract, and caramel powder.

Scientific Evidence for Matter

The matter has not gone through any clinical trials or scientific studies. However, the ingredients in Matter have gone through certain studies. The B-vitamin complex inside Matter, for example, went through a 2-year study with 162 participants with researchers from the University of Oxford. That study revealed powerful benefits, including a significant reduction in brain cell death compared to a placebo.

Meanwhile, ingredients like omega-3 fatty acids could protect brain cells, according to Harvard Medical School, and reduce the risk of cognitive decline. This 2015 study showed that long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, including EPA and EHA, had a significant effect on cognition among healthy adults. Researchers found a connection between brain cell membranes, brain cell communication, and omega-3 fatty acids.

Other studies have shown that the amount of DHA decreases when you stop taking omega-3 fatty acids. This study on animals, for example, showed that the levels of DHA drop when you don’t take omega-3 fatty acids. Another study showed people with low omega-3 fatty acid intake had deficits in learning and memory.

Today, many adults of all ages take omega-3 fatty acid supplements to support brain health. Some studies show omega-3 fatty acids can reduce the risk of mild cognitive impairment, although no major study has found a connection between omega-3 fatty acid supplements and more serious diseases like Alzheimer’s. People taking Alzheimer’s, for example, have taken omega-3 fatty acid supplements with no significant benefits.

The third ingredient in Matter, bilberry anthocyanins, works as an antioxidant to support health and wellness. Like other antioxidants, anthocyanins target free radicals and oxidation throughout the body, reducing inflammation in your brain and elsewhere. Bilberries are particularly rich with anthocyanins.

Some studies have specifically examined the cognitive benefits of bilberry extract. This 2014 study, for example, showed that bilberry extract had neuroprotective effects, potentially reducing the risk of degenerative brain conditions. Anthocyanins appeared to have similar benefits to catechin, quercetin, tannin, and other natural berry chemicals.

Overall, there’s evidence that Matter can support brain health in various ways. The two-year study from the University of Oxford is more research than other nootropics have, and it shows Matter’s formula can genuinely support brain health (as verified by MRI studies) in real participants.

Matter Pricing

The matter is priced at $40 to $60 per bottle, depending on whether you’re ordering a subscription or a single bottle. Each bottle comes with 60 tablets (30 servings), and you take two tablets daily to support brain health.

Here’s how pricing breaks down:

1 Bottle (One-time Purchase): $60

1 Bottle (Delivered Monthly): $50 per month (month-to-month), $45 per month (six-month term), or $40 per month (one year term)

Matter Refund Policy

Elysium Health does not appear to offer any type of refund policy on Matter or its other supplements. The company offers a limited refund on its Index tests, although Matter does not seem to come with any type of refund policy.

Here’s how the Elysium Health terms and conditions explain the refund policy:

“Unless expressly specified payments made to us are non-refundable.”

However, if you subscribe to Elysium’s auto-ship program and decide to cancel, you can receive a refund on future payments.

About Elysium Health

Elysium Health is a New York City-based nutritional supplement company that offers three products and services, including Basis (for cellular health and optimization), Index (a biological age test), and Matter (a nootropic supplement).

Elysium is led by Eric Marcotulli (CEO) and Leonard Guarente, Ph.D. (Chief Scientist). The company has academic partnerships with the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, the University of Oxford, and other academic institutions. As mentioned above, Elysium Health teamed up with researchers from the University of Oxford to create the B-vitamin complex used in Matter.

Leonard Guarente is a big deal in the anti-aging space. He was the first to identify the gene that controls aging, spotting the gene in yeast cells 25 years ago. Over the years, Guarente’s research has also focused on sirtuins (a group of seven proteins linked to longevity), NAD+, and other anti-aging components.

Final Word

New York City-based Elysium Health has launched its second major supplement, a nootropic called Matter. The supplement claims to reduce the death of brain cells as you get older. To do that, Matter uses a B-vitamin complex, anthocyanins, and omega-3 fatty acids.

Priced around $60 for a one-month supply, Matter claims to reduce the death of grey matter in your brain, including the areas of your brain responsible for memory and learning. As you get older, cells within this grey matter naturally die, and Matter claims to reduce this cell death.

That may sound like an old ab claim, but Elysium teamed up with the University of Oxford researchers to launch a two-year trial on the B-vitamin complex in Matter. That two-year trial showed significant changes in participants’ brains (according to MRI images) compared to a placebo.
