What is Blood Pressure 911?

Blood Pressure 911 is a nutritional supplement sold online through PhytAgeLaboratories.com and various sales pages.

The supplement claims to support the prevention of hypertension, support healthier blood pressure levels, and bolster cardiovascular health, among other benefits.

Ordinary blood pressure medications lower blood pressure by thinning your blood, making it easier for your heart to pump blood throughout your body. Blood Pressure 911 claims to offer similar benefits using a Japanese farmer’s secret “that naturally lowers high blood pressure,” which means you don’t have to take prescription drugs for your blood pressure.

You should be skeptical any time a supplement seems to recommend itself as an alternative for prescription drugs – especially for something as important as blood pressure.

Does Blood Pressure 911 really work? How does the supplement lower blood pressure? Let’s take a closer look at the story behind Blood Pressure 911.

The Story Behind Blood Pressure 911

As part of a 2020 marketing campaign, PhytAge Labs has launched a new sales page for Blood Pressure 911. That sales page features a man named Ed Corcoran.

Two years ago, when Ed was 48 years old, he was rushed to hospital after having a stroke. Ed had slightly high blood pressure after some financial issues. The hospital stay worsened these financial problems, leaving Ed and his family over $84,500 in debt.

Ed describes his experience as “my personal horror story.” He’s sharing that story with the internet to help others.

To make a long story short, Ed claims to have researched herbs, plants, and extracts that naturally lower blood pressure without the high cost or dangerous side effects of prescription drugs.

Ed met a Japanese doctor named Dr. Nakamura. Dr. Nakamura’s patients “have no high blood pressure at all” because he tells patients to eat 4 specific Japanese foods.

Ed added these four foods into the Blood Pressure 911 formula, and now sells the formula online through the sales page.

It’s a nice story – but there’s no evidence any of this is true. PhytAge Labs has a reputation for inventing whacky stories to sell supplements.

Awkward marketing story aside, let’s take a closer look at how Blood Pressure 911 works – or if it works at all.

How Does Blood Pressure 911 Work?

Blood Pressure 911 claims to “give your heart the support it needs” and “regulate your blood pressure back to healthy levels,” among other benefits.

To achieve these benefits, each capsule of Blood Pressure 911 contains a mix of vitamins and herbal extracts.

The bulk of the formula consists of a proprietary blend featuring hawthorn leaf extract, garlic, olive, hibiscus, buchu leaf, juniper berry, and green tea leaf extracts.

The formula also contains strong doses of vitamin C, niacin, vitamin B6, folate, and vitamin B12 – although you can get similar ingredients (at higher dosages) from any multivitamin.

Here’s how PhytAge Labs explains the specific benefits of each ingredient:

Buchu Leaf: This is the so-called “Japanese farmer’s secret” discussed on the Blood Pressure 911 sales page – although it comes from South Africa and not Japan. Buchu leaf extract comes from a 6-foot tall plant that grows naturally across South Africa, where it’s used as a traditional medicine. Studies show buchu can support healthy blood pressure. In fact, PhytAge Labs claims the buchu leaf extract in their formula “is great for people who want to lower their blood pressure naturally.” They also claim the plant extract has natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Juniper Berry: Blood Pressure 911 contains juniper berry, which “acts as a natural diuretic” to help lower blood pressure, according to PhytAge Labs. Juniper berries have been traditionally used to detoxify the heart and body.

Olive Leaf: Studies show that the Mediterranean diet is great for heart health – and the Mediterranean diet involves a significant amount of olive oil. PhytAge Labs cites a study showing olive leaf “substantially lowers blood pressure.” They also claim it reduces plasma total cholesterol compared to a placebo.

Herbal Extracts: PhytAge Labs claims the three ingredients listed above are the most important parts of Blood Pressure 911. To enhance these ingredients further, the company has added hawthorn, garlic, hibiscus, and green tea.

Vitamins: Blood Pressure 911 contains four vitamins, including vitamin C, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, and niacin. PhytAge Labs claims these ingredients can support various aspects of cardiovascular health. Vitamin B12, for example, “can halt the collection of homocysteine”, which builds up in blood vessels and raises the risk of heart problems.

Overall, PhytAge Labs claims these ingredients can help you live a normal life again – just like Ed Corcoran after his stroke. Ed claims he restored his blood pressure to a normal range by taking these ingredients and no longer has to worry constantly about a stroke or heart attack.

Blood Pressure 911 Ingredients

Dosage is important when taking any supplement. It’s particularly important when taking supplements that claim to affect your heart.

PhytAge Labs discloses the dosages of some ingredients, although most ingredient dosages are hidden within a proprietary formula, making it difficult to determine how much of each active ingredient is within the formula.

Here’s the full list of Blood Pressure 911 ingredients, according to the ingredients label:

  • 60mg of vitamin C (67% of your Daily Value or DV)
  • 2.5mg of niacin (16% DV)
  • 5mg of vitamin B6 (294% DV)
  • 100mcg of folate (25% DV)
  • 100mcg of vitamin B12 (4,167% DV)

620mg of a proprietary blend with hawthorn, garlic, olive, hibiscus, buchu, juniper, and green tea leaf extracts.

All ingredients are packaged into a gelatin capsule with microcrystalline cellulose, vegetable magnesium stearate, and silicon dioxide used as fillers, binders, and preservatives.

Scientific Evidence for Blood Pressure 911

PhytAge Labs claims their formula can naturally support blood pressure levels, lowing blood pressure using ingredients like the “Japanese farmer’s secret” buchu extract.

That all sounds good – but is there any evidence supporting Blood Pressure 911?

PhytAge Labs has not conducted any clinical trials or studies on its formula. They have not tested the formula on any animals or humans – or at least, they have not shared the results of these studies with anyone or published them in any peer-reviewed journal.

However, PhytAge Labs cites 16 studies on its ‘References’ page supporting various claims. We’ll review the cited evidence to determine if Blood Pressure 911 works as advertised – or if it’s another overpriced and over-hyped nutritional supplement with limited scientific evidence.

PhytAge Labs cites this study published in Physiotherapy Research in 2008. In that study, researchers gave 500mg or 1,000mg of olive leaf extract to rats, then measured the effects after 8 weeks. Researchers found significant improvements in blood pressure, cholesterol, and other cardiovascular measurements. In other words, olive leaf extract legitimately supported heart health in rats in this study.

Unfortunately, Blood Pressure 911 does not contain anywhere close to 500mg or 1,000mg of olive leaf extract. Blood Pressure 911 is also marketed to humans – not rats. It’s hard to assume these effects carry over to humans.

As further evidence, PhytAge Labs cites this 2016 study showing that olive leaf extract improved cholesterol readings in humans. Researchers gave olive leaf extract to a group of 60 men with high blood pressure, then measured the effects after 6 weeks. Researchers observed significant improvements in cholesterol, with men taking around 140mg of olive leaf extract per day.

To support juniper extract, PhytAge Labs cites this 2011 study showing juniper extract had antioxidant and antimicrobial activity, making it ideal for use “in the food industry as preservative agents.” However, researchers did not recommend using juniper extract for blood pressure.

PhytAge Labs makes a big deal out of its use of buchu, which they describe as a secret Japanese heart health ingredient. According to WebMD, however, buchu comes from South Africa – not Japan. Buchu is traditionally used to make medicine in South Africa, and some use it as an insect repellant, a deodorant, or an antimicrobial agent. However, there’s “insufficient evidence” for using buchu for high blood pressure, according to WebMD.

Overall, there’s limited evidence showing the ingredients in Blood Pressure 911 can meaningfully reduce blood pressure, and the dosages in the supplement seem much lower than what was used in other studies. It’s possible some of the ingredients help – but you can likely enjoy similar effects from any $10 multivitamin.

Final Word

Blood Pressure 911 is a nutritional supplement that claims to naturally support blood pressure using herbal extracts and vitamins.

Overall, the ingredients in Blood Pressure 911 could support blood pressure, although the dosages seem too small to significantly lower blood pressure or improve heart health. PhytAge Labs has provided limited evidence proving the supplement works as advertised, and the price of $50 to $70 per bottle seems excessive given the relatively low dosages.
