New Study Shows Plant-Based Diet Consumption May Protect Against Cardiovascular Diseases

Every person knows the importance of eating a healthy diet, but what exactly constitutes a healthy diet? What kind of diet could help reduce the risk of disease? Based on a recent study in the Journal of the American Heart Association, it looks like a diet that is rich in plant-based foods may be the key.

CVDs, or cardiovascular diseases, are one of the most widespread causes of death around the world, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). These diseases include stroke, coronary artery disease (CAD), and heart attack, among others, and there are millions of people that suffer from them. While there are many different diets available to help with heart health, a recent study in the Journal of the American Heart Association reveals that a diet that has many plant-based foods in it could help reduce the risk.

A predominantly plant-based diet incorporates more intake of foods that are made from plants. However, unlike a vegan or vegetarian diet, there’s no need to eliminate animal sources, as they offer a different level of nutrients.

During the study, researchers found that a higher ratio of plant-based foods can reduce the risk of many diseases, especially CVDs. This group of diseases specifically deals with the conditions that impact the heart and blood vessels, which could be prevented with lifestyle changes in what they eat.

The study included over 10,000 US adults, though none of the adults had CBD at the start of the study. The adults involved were observed from 1987 to 2016 and were all middle-aged. Researchers analyzed the intake of the adults, classifying the eating patterns of consuming plant-based rather than animal-based foods. In consuming a plant-rich diet, the adults reduced the cause of death in other ways by 25%, showing the importance of maintaining this type of diet for a healthier life.

The results of the study in the Journal of the American Heart Association are similar to that of previous studies on the dietary habits of consumers, including that of the DASH diet – Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension. The American Heart Association recommends consuming plant-based foods as part of a daily diet, and those foods should be highly nutritious, while low in cholesterol, sugars, saturated and trans fats, and added sodium. Diets that are higher in these substances typically don’t have as high of nutritional values.
